On the morning of February 23, 1987, in the small town of Leland, North Carolina, Lorene Potter stepped through the unlocked door of her daughter’s house and faced what no mother should ever have to see. Drawn to the bedroom by the sounds of a baby crying, Lorene discovered the body of her daughter, 23 year-old Beverly Jaye Potter Mintz, bound and brutally murdered. Jaye’s son, just shy of his second birthday, had witnessed the slaying.
